Friday, August 20th, 2010

Most of the time it has been seen that people have been dreaming of big lavish houses but due to some limitations end up buying small place, but this does not mean that small place can not be decorated. There are some simple home interior design ideas that can make the place look better and bigger.

Color Combinations

People with little space in their bedroom, kitchen and living room need not worry much as simple designing patterns will help to give a great appearance and style to their home. The technique of using colors and accessories needs to be given a wise thought as this will affect the look of home. The use of neutral shades will brighten up place and give an appeal of more space. Employing home interior design accessories like the furniture, curtains and lights will give a contemporary look.

While adding colors to the walls one can flaunt with multiple shades. Gone are those traditional days when all the walls of the room had to be uniform. The recent interiors suggest that adding diverse colors to walls of same room will put in grace. Apart from colors the various patterns and designs are also picking up trends. While selecting furniture it is not necessary that only wood work would charm the place, metals and leather furniture is the latest trends in home interior design.

In case of living rooms it is always suggested to match the colors of walls, accessories and furniture as this would give an organized look. Using glass and metal will enhance the living room area. Adding some spotlights and lamps in dining area, bedroom and lobby will modify the space and environment. The hanging type lights are completely out, but installing some small chandelier in the living room and bedroom is always a good option.

Accessories for Embellishment

One more excellent option to enhance the home interior design is by adding decorative pictures and paintings to the walls. People who wish to make rooms of their kids a great playing place can use those double floor beds with safety railing. Using the vacuum type sofas would make a child’s room even better. While designing the kitchen it is always good to include cabinets to give a clean look.

People who love to give a natural feel to their home can think of adding room plants. This will not only give a green look, but would also make the environment healthier. The use of large size windows will allow more sunlight and make the place appear bright. Home interior design and patterns will not only help to redecorate the area, but would also add a contemporary look to the traditional home.

Choose your bathroom paint colors

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Some general house painting techniques you can use for your bathroom:

A) Bright red and orange are freshness to you and it will feel like increase your physical strength, especially if these are used it at the shower area. These can be diluted with bathroom mirror if you like, you just completed a routine bathroom mirror in the bathroom with a perfect combination.

B) Cool colors like white and blue light in the bathroom ideally for most house painting, because these colors in the bathroom will be easily spotting dirty spots. Act quickly when spotted dirty - wash to clean out the bathroom easily.

C) In contrast to the internal use of painting in the bathroom like the rest of the house with its shape and location, a darker color can be used to increase space feeling. For darker contrasting effects in a small area is always good to increase space. However, for bathroom is not recommending to have darker color and advice to use light colors.

D) Black, the color used to fade in the bathroom is easy because they absorb more moisture rich in any bathroom; it’s always a need to draw again. On the other hand, light color did not have a strong water absorption feeling, so they last a while longer. Lighter color, so is the best bathroom choice, in any case those who make the space seem larger and more detailed.

Finally, if you feel that your bathroom is boring, what you can do is to hand some wonderful photos or pictures to bright the space feeling up. You will feel like a pleasant day after you visited a well painted bathroom.

Amazing Green Building: The ACROS Fukuoka

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

In Fukuoka City in Japan, they have an amazing building called “ACROS Fukuoka” with two very distinct sides: one side looks like a conventional office building with glass walls, but on the other side there is a huge terraced roof that merges with a park. The garden terraces, which reach up to about 60 meters above the ground, contain some 35,000 plants representing 76 species. A huge semicircular atrium and the triangular lobby provide contrast to the greenery, in this space is a symphony hall, offices and shops.

The building was constructed on the last remaining green space in the city center, so the architects, Emilio Ambasz & Associates, created a design to preserve the green space as much as possible, while still fitting in a large office building. In addition, a green roof reduces the energy consumption of a building, because it keeps the temperature inside more constant and comfortable. Green roofs also capture rainwater runoff, and support the life of insects and birds.

The building is a success in Japan, its terraced south facade utilized by many in the area for exercise and rest, affording views of the city and the harbor beyond. Unfortunately it has received little press overseas, especially in the United States.

This building was also featured in a book showcasing green roofs. Published last year, this visually attractive book has photos and descriptions of forty case studies of exemplary green roof projects — from Mexico City to Malmo, Sweden to Fukuoka, Japan to Dearborn, Michigan. It includes contributions from many of the leading people in the field. The book is intended to inform and inspire communities, designers, building owners by showcasing the environmental and aesthetic potential of large-scale green roofs.

world’s most sustainable building ever

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Winner of an international design competition for the Wuhan New Energy Center in Wuhan, China, the “Wuhan Energy Flower” by Grontmij and Soeters Van Eldonk Architects is essentially a research institute in the field of new energy sources and sustainability. Inspired by the Calla lily, the zero energy building is gonna be the first to receive the BREEM outstanding accreditation in the world. Powered by solar and wind energy, the flower-shaped building is 140m tall and is surrounded by a number of laboratories resembling the leaves.

Harnessing natural resources, the sustainable building collects rainwater in the bowl to fulfill its water requirements, and the solar panels enclosing the roof produces renewable electricity to fulfill the energy needs of the structure. Featuring pistil made in vertical axis wind turbines to collect renewable energy, the building integrates a solar chimney in the middle to maximize natural ventilation, while the rim of the bowl works as sunroof to heat and cool the building.

Vaastu:Choosing the Colours for a house

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Colours are known to influence the human mind and body as they have the ability to either depress or exhilarate. Our body absorbs colour energy through the vibration each colour gives off and these energies help to maintain a healthy body, mind and soul. Even in ancient times, people were aware of the positive effect of colours. So, Vastu Shastra has laid down guidelines on choosing the right colours for your house.

VAASTU GUIDELINES FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLOURS FOR A HOUSE:

In Vedic periods, all colours were obtained from vegetables and flowers. Though the options were far less than what are available today, they were more permanent, soothing to the eye and more natural in appearance. Today there are so many colours to choose from. But this makes the the choice of the right colour scheme for your house, a difficult task. This is where Vaastu Shastra comes to your aid. According to Vaastu, there are three methods that can be adopted for choosing colours for a house.

ZODIAC SIGN OF THE OWNER: In the first and most commonly followed method, the colour schemes are selected in conformance with the raashi (constellation / zodiac sign) of the owner to bring good luck and happiness.
Aries - Coral red
Taurus - Milky white
Gemini - Green
Cancer - Rose red, pearl white
Leo - Ruby red, dim white
Virgo - Emerald green
Libra - Cement color, milky white
Scorpio - Pink, coral red
Sagittarius - Golden yellow
Capricorn - Dim red
Aquarius - Pink, blue
Pisces - Yellow, pure white

How to Store Oil Paint and Keep it Workable

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

After a lifetime of fighting the lumps which accumulate and ruin expensive oil paint, I happened on a solution. I was watching a video and the artist (Johnnie something?) recommended using a glass palette and storing the oil paint underwater. Sounds crazy, but I have been doing it for several years and it works great.

I have kept the palette and oils submerged for weeks and had no loss in workability or performance. (Unlike storage containers or plastic wrap) The paint is completely unaffected by the water, though after some time, the blues and greens get a little hairy fungus starting on them. It’s then probably time to change the water or start with fresh paint.

Often, I have oil paint left on my palette after a painting session. More importantly, I have colors I have blended for the painting I am working on. I have tried many way of preserving these. I have used glass palette and simply submerged them in a tray of water. This works overnight quite well.

Another way I have come up with to preserve a palette is to use wax paper over my wood palette, or waxy disposable palettes. I simply cover them with either another piece of waxed paper or another disposable palette, and freeze them. This will keep the palette longer. I have never had any trouble with the paint after it has thawed out. It doesn’t seem to effect the paintings either, as I have done this for many, many year, and have never had any trouble with any of the paintings.

Painting Tips, Especially for First-Timers!

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Prior experience is essential when tackling many home improvement projects. But not so with interior painting. Even first-time painters can get super results when painting their newly purchased house, condo or apartment…and have a lot of fun in the process. Whether personalizing an entire new living space or updating one room at a time, paint is the do-it-yourselfer’s best decorating tool.

Like building a wardrobe, selecting a paint palette for your living space is a great form of personal expression. But be aware that the shade of paint you see on a color card - or even in the paint can - may look a lot different when applied to an entire room. To avoid surprises, follow these handy tips:

Don’t make your final color selection in the store; instead, take color cards home so you can see them right in the space that will be painted.

Evaluate the paint colors in daylight and under artificial light at night. Colors can change quite dramatically in different lighting conditions.

Remember that colors tend to intensify when applied to a large area. To compensate, it is often wise to choose a lighter value of a color, rather than a darker one.

When you go to purchase your paint, the counterperson will likely ask which “gloss level” you’d prefer. Paints come in a variety of sheen or gloss levels ranging from “high gloss” (the shiniest) to “flat” (virtually no shine). Those with higher gloss reflect more light, so they can make a room look brighter. On the other hand, higher gloss paints also tend to highlight surface imperfections, so if your walls and other surfaces are not in the best of shape, a flat paint might be the better option.

Color and sheen aside, the most important decision you’ll make in the paint store is the quality of paint you purchase. Top quality paints provide superior adhesion, offer better stain resistance, and resist yellowing. They also are tougher and more durable than ordinary paints, so they’ll keep a paint job looking great for a longer period of time. Bottom line: Don’t skimp on quality.

Before you leave the paint store, make sure that you have the right tools and brushes to do the job. Here again, quality counts — high quality brushes and rollers apply the paint more smoothly and evenly than economy-grade equipment. In addition, quality tools apply a heavier coat of paint that will help hide the color below, be more durable, and stand up better to cleaning and scrubbing.

Once you bring your purchases home, you’ll be tempted to start painting right away, but most walls and woodwork need to be cleaned first to help the paint adhere better. You can remove dust, dirt and grime with a simple detergent and water solution, after which you should rinse the surface clean and allow it to dry. If nail holes are present, they can be plugged with filling compound. Small cracks can be filled with a quality acrylic latex caulk.

Applying paint to interior walls is as simple as “framing” them by painting the outside edges with a brush, then filling in the center with your roller. An effective way to do this is to roll on the paint in a large “W” or “M” pattern, then fill it in, working in various directions.

When you’re done painting, protect your investment in the brushes and rollers by cleaning and storing them properly.

Always take safety precautions while painting. That means, among other things, not climbing a ladder any higher than the third rung from the top, making sure all stepstools are sturdy and locked into position before use, and wearing the proper eye and skin protection while preparing the surface and painting.
