Modern Architecture - Japanese School Made of Glass

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

I wanted to create a building where it isn’t clear if there are any rules at all,” explains Tokyo designer Junya Ishigami.

Composed of 305 steel columns and surrounded by glass, the Kanagawa Institute of Technology (KAIT) serves as a workshop for engineering and design students along with members of the local community.

Ishigami’s glass box is essentially the centerpiece of the institute. Using contemporary minimalism, a predominantly white interior, and lots of open space, the structure blurs the lines between the indoors and outdoors. The architect’s vision was to create the ambiance of a tree-filled forest, not a college classroom, making this one very cool learning environment.

Modern Architecture - Europe’s Heart of Africa Biodome

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Designed by London-based architects Proctor and Matthews for the Chester Zoo in Northern England, the Heart of Africa Biodome will be Europe’s largest conservation, animal, and leisure attraction.

The massive structure will be 112 feet (34 meters) high, cover 172,000 square feet ( 16,000 square meters), and will simulate the natural African rain forest habitats of the Congo. It includes an undulating dome and a jungle canopy with an authentic climate.

The Biodome will be home to a band of gorillas, a large troop of chimpanzees, okapi (rare giraffe-like creatures), birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates. An interactive water ride will provide extensive views of the animal enclosures. Themed retail and dining facilities will also be incorporated.

Korea Modern Architecture - Pixel House

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

How many pixels in a house? The modern, tech-inspired Pixel House, designed by Mass Studies, was designed for a young family in Paju City, Kyonggido, Korea. Its unique facade comes together one brick at a time, each brick representing a pixel as part of a whole image – the picture of innovation in Korean modern architecture. The staggered bricks form a curved front face and a three-dimensional profile. Inside, the contemporary design takes the form of its exterior, only with a much more refined, polished finish to the clean walls and cool curves of the space. But apart from its look, this unusual house design continues to surprise with its functions: by day this community center and public space is buzzing with activity of kids, while in the evening hours and on weekends it becomes a private abode. So, back to the question of how many pixels, the answer is 9,675. Mass Studies via Space Invading
